AquaBounty historically pursued a growth strategy that involved the construction of large scale recirculating aquaculture system farms to produce genetically engineered Atlantic salmon. The company aimed to combine its proprietary gene construct with land based aquaculture technology to achieve faster growth rates and improved sustainability compared to conventional salmon farming. AquaBounty's strategy rested on four core competencies: its genetically engineered Atlantic salmon, its experience operating land based farms, its vertical integration model and its expertise in biotechnology. Although it has sold its operating farms and intellectual property, the company retains the Ohio Farm Project which consists of land and construction in progress for a commercial scale recirculating aquaculture facility. As of March 27 2026 the company employed three individuals all in corporate roles.

The company intended to generate revenue from the sale of its genetically engineered Atlantic salmon raised in its recirculating aquaculture system farms. Revenue would have come from selling the harvested salmon to seafood processors distributors and retailers. In addition to fish sales AquaBounty pursued potential revenue streams from licensing its genetic technology and from the sale of aquaculture equipment and assets. As part of its liquidation efforts the company has sold its Indiana Farm its Canadian Farms selected equipment originally intended for the Ohio Farm Project and its intellectual property for the genetically engineered salmon. These asset sales have provided cash to support ongoing operations and to explore strategic alternatives for the remaining Ohio Farm Project.

AquaBounty positioned itself as a leader in the land based aquaculture sector through its proprietary genetically engineered Atlantic salmon and its experience with recirculating aquaculture system technology. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations the global aquaculture industry was valued at $296 billion in 2022 with salmon farming accounting for $22 billion of that total. The company highlighted several market drivers including projected global population growth to 9.7 billion by 2050 rising incomes and urbanization increasing demand for protein and the limitations of wild capture fisheries which have remained relatively stable since the late 1980s. AquaBounty emphasized competitive advantages such as total control of water flow reduced disease risk elimination of antibiotics and pesticides and multiple layers of containment to prevent escapes and protect wild fish populations. Competitors include established seafood farmers like Mowi SalMar and Cermaq as well as other land based RAS operators seeking to produce salmon in controlled environments.

The company planned to sell its genetically engineered Atlantic salmon to seafood processors distributors and retail chains that serve consumers. It also considered selling to food service providers such as restaurants and institutional caterers. Because the company has not operated any salmon farms since the sale of its Indiana and Canadian Farms it currently does not have an active customer base for fish production. Any future revenue would depend on the successful completion or sale of the Ohio Farm Project and the subsequent ability to produce and market salmon to those same channels.
