Every rectangle is sized by market capitalisation and coloured by price change over the period you pick — green for a gain, red for a loss, deeper shades for larger moves. Above the stock level a tile’s colour is cap-weighted, so one heavyweight moves its industry further than several small names.

The S&P 500, taken from the reported holdings of the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) rather than approximated from a screen. Each company sits in its primary BQ-MICS industry, so nothing is counted twice.
BQ-MICS — the Business Quant Multi-Industry Classification System.
Most companies do more than one thing, but conventional schemes file each into a single bucket. BQ-MICS gives every company one primary industry and as many secondary ones as the business actually warrants. This map uses the primary classification only, so no company is counted twice.
Tile size is market capitalisation. The bigger the company, the bigger its rectangle, so the map shows you where the market's weight actually sits rather than giving every company equal space. At the sector, industry group and industry levels, a tile is sized by the combined market cap of everything inside it.
Colour is price change over the timeframe you have selected — green for a gain, red for a loss, and the deeper the shade the larger the move. Above the stock level the change is market-cap weighted, so a large constituent moves its industry's colour more than a small one does.
The S&P 500. The constituent list is taken from the reported holdings of the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) rather than approximated, so the map covers the index as it is actually held. A company needs a live quote to be drawn, so the tile count can sit just under 500 on any given day.
Prices are live during market hours. The first view of the page is cached for up to a minute so that heavy traffic does not re-request the same snapshot, and the map refreshes as you change level or timeframe.
