Frequently Asked Questions

What is an investment proposal?

It is the document an advisor brings to a prospective client: what the client owns today, the portfolio the advisor recommends instead, and why the change is better for their goals, measured on risk, costs, diversification, income and the tax cost of moving.

How is the risk score calculated?

Each portfolio's score runs from 1 to 99 and comes from its volatility over the last three years: a bond fund scores about 25, a 60/40 portfolio about 50, the S&P 500 about 75 and a single volatile stock in the 90s. The client's score comes from the seven-question questionnaire, with a band of 10 points either side, so you can see whether each portfolio fits.

Does the comparison look inside mutual funds and ETFs?

Yes. Every fund is replaced by its latest holdings from its SEC N-PORT filing, so a client who owns Apple directly and through three funds sees their full Apple exposure, and sector, region and overlap figures reflect what the funds actually hold.

How does the tax-aware transition work?

Holdings that are also in the proposed model are kept up to their target weight. Lots at a loss are sold first, because they offset gains. Lots at a gain are sold in order of the least gain per dollar until the capital gains budget you set is used; anything beyond it stays as a legacy holding. The plan shows each lot sold, the short- and long-term gains, the estimated tax against selling everything, and how far the result drifts from the model.

Are backtests total return?

Yes. They include dividends and fund distributions on their ex-dates, adjusted for splits, at constant weights rebalanced daily and before fees. A holding without price history on a given day earns the benchmark's return that day, and each figure says how much of the portfolio had its own history.

Can I share a proposal with a client?

Yes. Save the proposal and turn on its share link: the client opens a read-only report with your branding, without signing in. You can see how many times it was opened and when, and switch the link off at any time.

Can I use my own models?

Yes. Start from one of seven low-cost ETF models, from conservative to aggressive, income and dividend growth, or enter any mix of stocks, ETFs and mutual funds and save it as your own model.

Is this financial advice?

No. The proposal builder is an analysis tool for advisors and investors. Past performance and simulations do not guarantee future results, and tax figures are estimates from the lots and rates you enter, not tax advice.
