Dollar Tree Inc is an American company that runs discount variety stores across American and Canada. The company has more than 15,000 stores across 48 states in America and 5 provinces in Canada. The store provides all kinds of products among different merchandise categories. The firm’s business can be separated into two major segments – Dollar Tree stores and Family Dollar stores.
The Dollar Tree stores are the largest single point price retailer in North America. They offer all their products at $1 or less. Their major offerings are consumer products like food, healthcare, beauty products, etc., various products like toys, paper, stationery, etc. and seasonal products like Christmas décor, valentine cards, etc.
The Family Dollar stores are one of the fastest-growing retail stores in America. They offer a variety of products at competitive prices unlike the fixed price system in Dollar Tree stores.
Their major offerings include the offerings that are available at Dollar Tree stores along with other products like tobacco, houseware, glassware, sheets, pillows, electronics, etc.
Dollar Tree Inc’s major competitors are Ross, Bon- Ton, Fred’s, Macy’s, etc. Dollar Tree’s revenue as of 2019 was about $22.83 billion. It’s two business segments contribute almost equally to the total revenue with minor variations of less than 3% quarterly. In recent quarters Dollar Tree’s share has increased marginally over Family Dollar’s.
Revenue from Dollar Tree stores has been improving slowly quarter on quarter. 2018 Q1 revenue from Dollar Tree stores was $2.78 billion and $2.77 billion in the second quarter, after which it started growing and went up to $2.85 billion in the third quarter. Dollar tree stores saw the biggest spike in revenue in the last quarter of 2018 to $3.31 billion.2019 Q1 saw a decline in revenue from the previous quarter, but it was still above the average revenue. Revenue’s in 2019 Q1 and Q2 were stable at $2.96 billion.
Family Dollar started 2018 with $2.77 billion in revenue in the first quarter which started to marginally decline to $2.76 billion in the second quarter and $2.69 billion in the third quarter. The fourth quarter of 2018 saw a rise in Family Dollar revenue as well to $2.90 billion. 2019 Family Dollar revenue declined to $2.85 billion in the first quarter and $2.78 billion in the second quarter. Despite the number of stores of Family Dollar decreasing towards 2019, the revenues were fairly stable and did not fall below the average level.
The growth in the number of stores of Dollar Tree can be traced in its revenue and also, it’s a share in the total revenue.
Dollar Tree Inc. is expected to grow further in the coming years and revenue is expected to go up by 25% to about $23 billion by the end of 2019. The revenue from Dollar Tree stores is increasing as the store gains more popularity. Family Dollar stores are also working towards an upgrade to improve customer engagement and efficiency.
