Ambarella Inc. is engaged in the business of developing HD and ultra HD video compression, image processing, and computer vision solutions. Its products are used in applications like autonomous driving, ADAS, robotics, etc. Their major competitors are Texas Instruments, Foresight, Analog Devices, and Infineon. The majority of the company’s revenue comes from the Asia- Pacific region especially Taiwan, followed by Europe and North America.

Ambarella’s major customers are Chicony, GoPro, Wintech, and Hakuto. Until 2018 GoPro and it’s ODM’s were amongst the biggest customers for Ambarella, after which they stopped buying from Ambarella. Wintech has always been the biggest customer with more than 50% of the company’s revenue coming from them. Chicony is the next big customer contributing to about 20-25% of the company’s revenue.

In the first quarter of 2019 Hakuto was also one of the major buyers and revenue from Hakuto was $6.83 million.

The revenue from Chicony in the first quarter of 2019 was $6.26 million and then the revenue from Chicony started growing and went up to $9.37 million in the second quarter, $13.18 million in the third quarter and then dropped down to $8.17 million in the fourth quarter of 2019. The revenue at the start of 2020 increased slightly to $8.49 million in the first quarter and is expected to go up to $11.56 million in the second quarter and then drop back to $10.66 million in the third quarter and $10.30 by the last quarter of 2020.

Revenue from its biggest customer Wintech was $33.02 million in the first quarter of 2020, which increased to $39.36 million in the second quarter before dropping to $28.07 million in the third quarter after which it went up marginally to $29.62 million in the fourth quarter. The revenue from Wintech then dropped down to $27.84 million in the first quarter of 2020. It is expected to go up to $30.97 million in the second quarter and then shoot up to $42.79 million in the third quarter and then drop back by almost $7 million to $34.33 million.

The revenue from other smaller customers was at $10.82 million in the first quarter of 2020. The revenue then started to grow quarter on quarter and increased to $13.74 million in the second quarter and to $17.49 million by the third quarter. The revenue then fell down to $13.82 by the end of the fourth quarter. It further dropped to $10.85 million in the first quarter of 2020 but is expected to go up again to $13.88 million in the second quarter, $14.47 million in the third quarter, and %12.95 million in the last quarter of 2020.

The total revenue for Ambarella has been declining since the last quarter of 2018. Their revenue fell down by 23% in 2019 to $227.8 from $295.4 million in 2018. The majority of the drop in the revenue can be attributed to the loss of GoPro and its original design manufacturers. GoPro’s contribution to the total revenue would reach almost 35% in some quarters. Even after the loss of GoPro, the estimated numbers for 2020 show that Ambarella is still a major player in the market and can move towards a fast-growing phase.
