The two business platforms, Optum and UnitedHealthcare, have four reportable segments:
OptumHealth’s customers include health systems, employers, government, and health plans. Optum Financial like Optum Bank serves consumers through health savings and other accounts. OptumHealth markets its products through its direct sales force, strategic collaborations, and external producers in areas like employers that include large, mid-sized, and small employers; payers which include TPAs, health plans, underwriter, and individual product intermediaries; and government entities that include the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Defense, Veterans Affairs, and other federal, state and local health care agencies.
In Q1 2021, revenue from OptumHealth contributed 13% to the total revenue amounting to $12.40 billion. The revenue has increased by 35% year-over-year from $9.19 billion in Q1 2020. This increase in revenue is primarily due to organic growth and acquisitions in risk-based care delivery.
It serves the needs of health systems, physicians, health plans, state governments, and life sciences companies. OptumInsight’s products and services are sold essentially through a direct sales force, an array of alliances, and business partnerships with other technology vendors, that integrate and interface OptumInsight’s products with their applications.
In Q1 2021, revenue from OptumInsight segment contributed only 3% to the total revenue amounting to $2.85 billion. The revenue has increased by 14% year-over-year from $2.49 billion in Q1 2020. Revenue from operations at OptumInsight increased primarily due to growth in technology and managed services.
OptumRx offers multiple clinical programs, digital tools, and services to help clients manage overall pharmacy and health care costs to promote better health outcomes. OptumRx renders various medication management, utilization management, quality assurance, adherence, and counselling programs to complement each client’s plan design and clinical strategies. OptumRx integrates medical and pharmaceutical care management by using data and advanced analytics, which helps improve comprehensive decision-making, close gaps in care, elevate quality, and reduce costs for customers.
In Q1 2021, revenue from OptumRx contributed 23% to the total revenue amounting to $21.6 billion. However, the revenue has not changed since Q1 2020.
In Q1 2021, revenue from UnitedHealthcare contributed 60% to the total revenue amounting to $55.11 billion. The revenue has increased by 8% year-over-year from $51.07 billion in Q1 2020. This makes it the key driver behind United Healthcare’s Revenue by Segment.
