Snapchat is a mobile messaging application that allows users to share photos, videos, texts, and drawings. It is a free app and there are no additional in-app costs. Three students from Stanford University developed it. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that the picture and message become inaccessible after a short period. The app has gained a lot of popularity, especially amongst the youth. As of March 2020, Snapchat 229 million daily active users. Snapchat came as a very innovative social media application and thus was able to gain so many users. On average more than 4 billion snaps are sent each day.
Snapchat has seen a 20% growth in the number of users from 2019. The biggest market for Snapchat is North America, followed by Europe and the rest of the world. The growth in Snapchat users in countries outside of Europe and North America has been the major driving force for them. Snapchat’s revenue in the last quarter of 2019 increased by 44% YoY to $561 million. Almost all of Snapchat’s revenue comes from advertisements.
Snapchat’s major revenue comes from North America as the country has the most number of users. North America accounts for almost 70% of Snapchat’s revenue. First-quarter 2019 revenue from North America alone was $226 million. Revenue was growing consistently over the next quarter with revenues of $260 million in Q2, $316 million in Q3, and $382 million in Q4. Snapchat was showing revenue growth of almost 20% QoQ in 2019. The revenue from the European region was also growing quarterly starting at $47 million in the first quarter of 2019 to $92 million inQ4. Revenues’ jumped from $69 million inQ3 to $92 million in Q4 showing a growth of almost 33%. The revenue from other regions was also growing rapidly from $47 million in the first quarter to $87 million in Q4. Fourth-quarter revenue figures have shown a big leap in revenue figures generating a positive outlook for Snapchat.
Snapchat had a tough 2018 and made a good recovery in 2019. They saw a 38% growth in revenue from 2018. Snapchat expected revenue to go up to almost $450-$470 million in the first quarter of 2020, which is much more when compared to Q1 2019’s revenue figure of $320 million. This figure was possible for Snapchat as the number of users has been increasing substantially especially in countries outside their primary market, for example India.
