Average Revenue Per User (ARPU)

ARPU is the shortened acronym for Average Revenue Per User. Businesses use this statistic to track the aspects that contribute to the organization’s overall income. ARPU assists businesses in analyzing their growth trends and comparing their performance to that of their competitors.

Calculating ARPU is an excellent approach for a company to keep track of its annual growth. Subscriber revenue for the years ended December 31, 2021 and 2020 was $6,084 and $5,857, respectively, marking an increase of 4%, or $227. The rise was mostly due to a 5% increase in ARPU and a 4% increase in self-pay subscribers, which resulted in greater self-pay income and U.S. Music Royalty Fees, partially offset by decreased revenue from automakers providing paid promotional subscriptions.

Sirius XM

The Sirius XM ARPU is calculated as:

  • ARPU results from total Sirius XM subscriber revenue earned and advertising revenue, excluding revenue from the company’s connected vehicle services
  • divide this amount by the number of months in the period,
  • divide this by the daily weighted average number of subscribers for the period.

ARPU was $14.76 and $14.10 for the years ending December 31, 2021 and 2020, respectively.

Subscriber’s ARPU of Sirius XM was $14.84 and $14.15 for the three months ending September 30, 2021 and 2020, respectively. Subscriber ARPU – Sirius XM was $14.57 and $14.02 for the nine months ending September 30, 2021 and 2020, respectively. As we continue to return to pre-COVID-19 levels, the gains were driven by a rise in some subscription prices and the U.S. Music Royalty Fee, as well as a drop in paid trials and greater advertising income.

Pandora

The average monthly subscriber revenue per paid subscriber on our Pandora subscription services is calculated as the Pandora ARPU.

ARPU was $6.69 and $6.76 for the years ending December 31, 2021 and 2020, respectively.

Subscriber ARPU – Pandora was $6.70 and $6.83 for the three months ending September 30, 2021 and 2020, respectively. Subscriber ARPU – Pandora was $6.68 and $6.79 for the nine months ending September 30, 2021 and 2020, respectively. The losses in subscriber ARPU were mostly attributable to a shift in the premium plan mix at Pandora.
