Headquartered in New York, Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE: MA) is an American multinational financial services corporation. Mastercard manages its global operations in O’Fallon, Missouri, United States. The company’s prime business is to process payments between the card-issuing banks or credit unions of the purchasers and the banks of merchants who use the “Mastercard” brand credit, debit, and prepaid cards to make purchases. Since 2006 Mastercard Worldwide has traded as a public company. Before issuing its IPO, Mastercard acts as a cooperative which is owned by more than 25,000 financial institutions that issue its branded cards worldwide.
The year 2017
In coordination with an increase in the number of cards, the cash volume is also aligned with consistent growth throughout the year. The cash volume signifies that worldwide the debit card program is favored more when compared to the credit card program. In the first quarter, the debit card program sufficed with $303 billion, with 9.5% yearly growth worldwide, partially offset by an unfavorable decrease in the United States. On the contrary side, the US reported the highest growth of 18.4% in the credit card program. In the subsequent quarters, the United States reported a significant usage of credit cards, leading to a rise in cash volume by 23.4% in the third quarter. In the last quarter, the debit card program leads the highest growth worldwide, along with a minute increase in the United States, leading to a cash volume of $332 billion. The growth levels in the credit card program dropped to $50 billion of cash volume this quarter.
The year 2018
This year, the growth seems quite fluctuating with negative growth in the credit card program. In the first quarter, the cash volume is $331 billion for the debit card program with immense growth worldwide. Despite the growth in the United States, the credit card program reported a drop-in cash volume to $49 billion. In the second quarter, the credit card program reported an overall negative growth of 0.4% caused by negative growth in the United States. The streak continues in the third quarter with negative growth in the United States in both the programs. The overall growth for the debit card program also dropped to $339 billion. In the last quarter, the credit card program’s cash volume reported a minute increase to $49 billion, while the debit card program crossed the figure $300 billion worldwide.
The year 2019
The growth was consistent during the year, with significant improvements in both the programs. In the first quarter, the United States reported negative growth in both programs. The debit card program marked the figure of 344 million cards with significant improvements worldwide. In the third quarter, the US’s credit card program saw an immense growth of 19.9%, which is highest in the past eight quarters. While growth in the debit card program seems consistent over the previous quarters. In the last quarter, the United States reported 0.1% growth in the debit card program with overall 397 million cards while the credit card program reported a global growth of 11.4%.
