Blackberry Limited is a Canadian multinational company specializing in enterprise software and the Internet of things. It was originally known as Research In Motion (RIM), best known for it’s Blackberry brand of smartphones and tablets. It later transitioned into an enterprise software and services company. Its products are used worldwide by government agencies. Business and car manufacturers.

Blackberry’s business can be categorized into 4 segments

  • Enterprise Software – Sells software products including the Blackberry enterprise mobility suite that provides endpoint management and also the Blackberry AtHoc, which is a secure platform for communication.
  • Technology Solutions – Blackberry also provides certain software’s like Blackberry QNX embedded software and other emerging softwares such as the Blackberry Radar fleet management solutions.
  • Licensing IP & Other – This segment is engaged in the monetization of the firm’s global patent portfolio and the mobile licensing operations, which enable licensing of Blackberry brand and device software to the handset vendors.
  • Handset and Related Services – This includes Blackberry smartphones and tablets and the aftermarket services related to them.

In the endpoint management space Blackberry competes with big players like IBM, Microsoft, VMware and Mobile Iron.  Blackberry’s total revenue has been dropping for the last 4-5 years. Their revenue’s dropped from $1.3 billion in 2017 to $904 million in 2019.

Blackberry’s revenues have declined by about $400 million in the last 2 years due to a decline in their handset and related services revenue. Blackberry’s revenue from handsets and related services dropped to less than $15 million dollars in 2019 from $374 million in 2017.

Service access fees have been dropping quarter on quarter since the second quarter of 2017 and came down to as low as $9 million by the third and fourth quarter of 2019.

Blackberry’s revenue’s from licensing IP and other segment has been growing steadily over the past 2 years.  2017 revenue’s from this segment were about $127 million and as of 2019 the revenue’s from this segment were $286 million showing a growth of more than 100% over 2 years. Quarterly revenue’s from this segment have also been growing at a fast rate with revenue growing from $68 million in the third quarter to $99 million in the fourth quarter of 2019. This has been one of Blackberry’s fastest growing segments.

The enterprise software segment of Blackberry has been comparatively steady over the years. They saw a growth in revenue’s from this segment in 2018 QoQ. As revenue moved from $91 million in the second quarter of 2019 to $97 million in the third quarter and $108 million in the last quarter of 2018.  Revenue went down again in the first quarter of 2019 to $79 million, but started to grow again in the second and third quarters and the last quarter revenue for 2019 was about $92 million.

Blackberry Technology solutions has seen a slow but steady growth over the last 2 years. With revenue growing from $151 million in 2017 to $204 million in 2019. Quarterly growth in 2019 has also been noticed with Q1 revenue at 47 million and Q4 revenue at $55 million.

The major drop in Blackberry’s revenue is owed to the falling demand of their handset devices. The licensing IP and other segment has been doing well and is expected to grow further into 2020 as well.
