In Q1 2020 the discount rate decreased to 2.34%, followed by further decline in Q2 2020. With the company declining its discount rate to 2.2%, this quarter marked one of the lowest discount rates of American Express. Between Q3 2020 and Q3 2021, American Express’ Average Discount Rate has been constant at 2.3%. This indicates a strong sign of stability in the discount rate from the past 5 quarters. The broad range of this metric can be defined between 2.2% and 2.4%.

Overall, American Express’ Average Discount Rate has been fluctuating between 2.2% and 2.4% over 5 years from 2016 to 2021, which reflects that American Express believes in constant discount rates so that it does not lose its customers if it sharply increases the rates, and neither does the company face any loss due to sharp declines in this figure.
