This statistic highlights American Express’ Average Discount Rate, reported on a quarterly basis from Q1 2016 onwards.

American Express Co. is the global leader in making cashless transactions safe and easy. It is spread across 175 countries and has 2300 offices all over the globe.

What is Discount Rate?

Discount rate refers to the extra amount one pays while making a transaction through a credit card. This rate can vary from company to company. In American Express’ filings, the phrase “Discount Rate” indicates the charge that the company levies on its customers as processing fees. American Express has a system of charging discount rate on the total amount of transactions made by the user through American Express’ card, unlike other credit card companies who charge the discount rate on each transaction made by the customer. Being a market leader, American Express usually keeps its discount rate at a decent price for whatever it can charge in the current economic condition.

American Express’ Average Discount Rate reduced from 2.4% to 2.3% between Q1 2016 and Q3 2021, which depicts a decline of 4.1%. The metric was constant at a rate of 2.4% in the third and fourth quarter of 2019, after which there were a few fluctuations.

In Q1 2020 the discount rate decreased to 2.34%, followed by further decline in Q2 2020. With the company declining its discount rate to 2.2%, this quarter marked one of the lowest discount rates of American Express. Between Q3 2020 and Q3 2021, American Express’ Average Discount Rate has been constant at 2.3%. This indicates a strong sign of stability in the discount rate from the past 5 quarters. The broad range of this metric can be defined between 2.2% and 2.4%.

Overall, American Express’ Average Discount Rate has been fluctuating between 2.2% and 2.4% over 5 years from 2016 to 2021, which reflects that American Express believes in constant discount rates so that it does not lose its customers if it sharply increases the rates, and neither does the company face any loss due to sharp declines in this figure.
