United Airlines’ revenue fell about 78% from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020. The total earnings fell from $11.38 billion to $7.75 billion from Q3 2019 to Q3 2021, marking a dip of approximately 32%. However, there was also a growth in revenue from Q3 2020 to Q3 2021 of about 211%. The quarterly growth in revenue from Q2 2021 to Q3 2021 was about 42%.
Atlantic Region
For the Atlantic region, there was a fall in revenue of approximately 83% from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020. There was also a dip of approximately 47% from Q3 2019 to Q3 2021. However, the company was able to recover the revenue, which grew from $0.365 to $1.116 billion from Q3 2020 to Q3 2021, marking a growth of about 206%. The growth in revenue from Q2 2021 to Q3 2021 was 91%. The Atlantic region accounted for about 14% of the total revenue of United Airlines.
Domestic Region
The domestic regions of Canada and US account for the highest share of 70% of the revenue. Again, there was a fall of 76% and 24% from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020 and from Q3 2019 to Q3 2021 respectively, due to the novel coronavirus. But the company was able to consistently increase its revenue by 224% from Q3 2020 to Q3 2021. Also, there was a growth of approximately 44% in Q3 2021 when compared to Q2 2021.
Latin America
There was a fall in revenue for this region too, from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020 and Q3 2019 to Q3 2021 of about 81% and 6% respectively. The revenue grew remarkably from $0.170 billion to $0.849 billion marking a growth of approximately 400% from Q3 2020 to Q3 2021. The revenue also grew by 17% in Q3 2021 as compared to the previous quarter. This region accounted for 11% of the total revenue.
Pacific Region
The revenue fell from $1.28 billion to $0.282 billion marking a dip of 78% from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020. There was also a fall of 71% in revenue from 2019 to 2021. On the other hand, there was an increase in revenue of approximately 32% from Q3 2020 to Q3 2021. On the contrary, the revenue decreased by about 5% in Q3 2021 as compared to Q2 2021. This region had the least share of 4.8% of the total revenue of United Airlines.
The company experienced huge declines in the demand of passengers due to COVID-19 in 2020 and hence such reductions in revenue from 2019 to 2020 we caused. The full impact of this pandemic on the company is yet to be determined due to the uncertainty and other factors which are not in the company’s control. The quarantine requirements, the travel restrictions on international and domestic travel, social distancing along with remote working conditions have led to a decline in the passenger demand, business as well as leisure travel bookings.
The company cut about 57% of its capacity in 2020 as compared to 2019 and expects a cut of approximately 51% in the 2021 capacity with respect to the same. The company will continue to evaluate and cancel the flights on a 60-day basis until there is growth in demand.
