Company Overview
Founded in 1985, Starbucks is a premier roaster, marketer and retailer of coffee, operating in 81 markets. Through the company-operated stores, it purchases and roasts high-quality coffee that they sell, along with their handcrafted coffee, tea and beverages. The company has been expanding its global reach by opening stores in not only developed countries like U.S. but also in new growing markets like China.
Starbucks’ Company Stores by Region
During fiscal 2019, according to the Starbucks Stores By Region Statistics 2020, revenue from company-operated stores accounted for 81% of the total net revenues. Company-operated stores have benefited due to superior customer service and clean,well-maintained stores that reflect the personalities of the communities in which the stores are operated. Usually,these stores are located in high-traffic and high-visibility locations.
Majority of the company-operated stores are located in the United States, followed by China,Japan and Canada. Recently,in 2019, Starbucks sold its stores in Thailand, France and the Netherlands to private companies, thus converting them to fully licensed stores.
United States
At the end of 2019, Starbucks had around 8867 company-operated stores in U.S. Out of the 218,000 employed by Starbucks in U.S, 209,000 are employed in company-operated stores.
China
China has around 4292 Starbucks-operated stores at the end of 2019. It has been the fastest growing market and the second largest market for Starbucks overall. Having recently acquired the East China business, the China market is 100% company-owned.
Japan
After the U.S and Canada, the Japanese market is the third-largest market for Starbucks as per Starbucks Stores By Region Statistics data 2020. Having transferred 1,009 licensed stores to company-operated stores in the fiscal year 2015, the current Starbucks store count in Japan stands at 1,408.
Canada
Canada has around 1,153 company-operated Starbucks stores at the end of 2019.
