This statistic shows the Starbucks’ Number of Stores Worldwide, reported on a quarterly basis from Q2 2015 onwards.
Starbucks Corporation is an American multinational which operates coffeehouses and restaurants. They buy and roast high-quality coffee that is then sold, along with handcrafted coffee, tea, and other beverages and a variety of high-quality food items, through company-operated stores. The company operates two types of stores:
Q1 2020 | Q2 2020 | Q3 2020 | Q4 2020 | Q1 2021 | Q2 2021 | |
Total Stores (Licensed & Co. Operated) | 31,795 | 32,050 | 32,180 | 32,660 | 32,938 | 32,943 |
(Figures in actual units)
From the chart, it can be seen that the number of Starbucks stores worldwide has increased every quarter between Q2 2015 and Q2 2021, from 21,666 to 32,943 which is an increase of 52%.
Further, between Q1 2021 when 32,938 stores existed, and Q2 2021, the number of stores saw a growth of 0.01%. This is the lowest growth rate in any quarter from Q2 2015 to Q2 2021. Meanwhile, a comparison between Q2 2021, where the number of stores was 32,050, and Q2 2020, there was a 3% increase in the number of stores. From Q1 2020 to Q2 2021, it can be seen that the number of stores has increased, from 31,795 to 32,943. This shows that despite the COVID -19 pandemic the number of stores of Starbuck has shown an increasing trend. What is also significant to mention is the fact that this growth comes in the backdrop of the company announcing the closure of 400 stores in June 2020. The table also shows that, amongst all quarters, the highest inter-quarter growth has been between Q3 2020 and Q4 2020, when the number of stores increased by 480, which was a growth rate of about 1.5%.
The number of Starbucks stores will continue to increase as the company plans to increase its store count to about 55,000 by 2030 and has plans to open an outlet in Laos as well. The company also announced that it planned to open 300 stores that will primarily focus on ‘carryout’ and ‘pickup orders’, in consonance with COVID-19 norms. Starbucks calls it “convenience-led” formats with a drive-through and curbside pick-up. These new stores will function through the Starbucks mobile app for pre-payment by the customer before he comes to the store to pick up his order. The layout of some stores is also planned to be suitably modified to include a separate counter for picking up mobile orders.
