This statistic highlights Starbucks’ Company and Licensed Stores, reported on a quarterly basis from Q2 2015 onwards.
Starbucks Corporation deals in the purchase and sale of high-quality coffees, along with handcrafted coffee, tea and other beverages and a variety of high-quality food items through company-operated stores. Apart from its company-operated stores, it also sells a variety of coffee and other products through its licensed stores.
According to the Starbucks Stores By Type – Statistics 2020, by the end of 2019, Starbucks has over 31000 company-operated and licensed stores which were an increase of 6% from the prior year. While Company-operated stores contributed to 81% of the total revenues, fully licensed stores accounted for 11% of the total revenues. Company-operated stores generally have a higher gross margin and lower operating margin than licensed stores. Under the licensed model, Starbucks receives a certain margin on branded products and supplies sold along with royalty on retail sales in the store. Employees are given similar training and are made to follow operating procedures in the same way in both the stores.
Company-operated stores
At the end of 2019, Starbucks had around 16000 company-operated stores that accounted for 51% of its total stores. Starbucks has over 10000 of these stores located in America, 5700 in China & Asia Pacific and the rest in Europe,Middle east and Africa. In the fiscal year 2019, there were 665 new net stores opened, which is a 12% increase over the prior year.
Licensed stores
Starbucks has around 15700 licensed stores through which it earns royalty as a revenue. Out of 15700, 8183 stores are located in America, 4205 are located in China & Asia Pacific and the rest are in Europe, Middle east and Africa. In the year 2019, 377 company-operated stores in Thailand were switched to licensed store and 82 company-operated stores in France and Netherlands were transferred to fully licensed stores. Licensed stores help Starbucks to globalize its brand in regions where their local partners have access to desirable retail space. In return, Starbucks earns License fees and royalty as a source of revenue.
