This statistic highlights PayPal’s Total Payment Volume Worldwide (TPV), reported from Q1 2016 onwards.
PayPal Holdings Inc. is a technology platform and digital payments company based in America. They operate a two-sided global technology platform linking customers to merchants worldwide to facilitate payment transactions. PayPal merged with X.com owned by Elon Musk in 2000. Consequently, eBay acquired it at a valuation of $1.5 billion. It allows its customers to use their account for both purchase of goods, as well as to transfer and withdraw funds. The platform also offers customers to exchange funds with merchants using funding sources through bank accounts, PayPal account balance, PayPal credit account or other stored value products. It offers person to person payment solutions on it’s website and mobile application, Venmo and Xoom.
In 2019 PayPal’s total payment volume was estimated at more than $700 billion. Previously, in 2016 the total payments volume worldwide amounted to $81.06 billion in Q1. $86.21 billion in the Q2 and $87.40 billion and $99.35 billion in Q3 and Q4 respectively. In 2017 the payments volume increased to $99.33 billion in the first quarter and $107.80 billion in the second quarter. Q3 and Q4 showed $115.22 billion and $132.51 billion respectively. For the next year, 2018, the payments volume had gone up to $132.36 billion in the first quarter, $139.40 billion in the second quarter, $143 billion in the third quarter and $164 billion in the last quarter of the year. In 2019 payments volume was $161 billion in the third quarter and reached to almost $200 billion by the end of the year. By the first quarter of 2020 payments volume increased to $190.57 billion.
In 2016 payments volume increased by 6.36% in the second quarter, 1.39% in the third quarter and 13.67% in the fourth quarter.The next year, 2017, the payments volume increased by 8.53% in the second quarter, 6.89% in the third quarter and 15% in the fourth quarter. The payments decreased by 0.11% in the first quarter and then increased by 5.32% in the second quarter, 2.58% in the third quarter and 14.68% in the fourth quarter in 2018. Payments volume decreased by 1.83% in the first quarter of 2019 and then increased by 7.06% in the second quarter, 3.66% in the third quarter and 11.60% by the end of the year. The payments volume decreased by 4.43% in the first quarter of 2020.
Over the years the payment volumes through PayPal have increased year on year as well as quarter on quarter. It is one of the most popular payment gateways in the world. Over the course of the past four years payments volume through PayPal has more than doubled, from around $300 billion in 2016 to more than $700 million in 2019. As the years roll by the payments made through digital platforms are expected to grow swiftly. The increase in technology along with the ease and safety of payments has made digital payments a popular method and PayPal one of the biggest brands in the segment.
