Microstrategy marked a total revenue of $127.99 million in the latest quarter of 2021. In Q3 2020, the total revenue was $127.41 million. In Q2 2021, this figure was a bit lower as it stood at $125. 35 million.
Microstrategy’s revenue can be further bifurcated into the following business verticals:
Consulting
The company delivers consulting services in this vertical to help customers plan and execute software deployments. Customers are not obligated to employ consulting services in order to get the most out of the product. Consulting services are frequently sold separately and are either (i) paid in advance or (ii) billed on a time-and-materials basis.
Revenue from Consulting services has increased by $2.79 million from Q3 2020 to Q3 2021. In Q3 2021, this segment contributed to 15% of the company’s total earnings, with revenue worth $19.74 million. In Q2 2021, the revenue contribution was slightly higher at $20.62 million.
Education
The organisation sells numerous education and training services to their consumers within this sector. Education services are marketed separately under two types of agreements: 1) Annual subscriptions to live and on-demand training courses, and 2) custom courses purchased on an hourly basis.
This sector contributes only about 1% to the company’s total revenue. In the three quarters of Q3 2020, Q2 2021, and Q3 2021, it generated revenue in the range of $1.19 million to $1.22 million. It is the lowest contributing segment of the company.
Product support
In this segment, customers must purchase a standard product support package with every product licence transaction, and they can upgrade to a premium product support package for a predetermined annual charge. Technical support and when-and-if-available software upgrades are included in all product support packages and are handled as a single performance obligation.
It is observed that Microstrategy Inc has generated maximum revenue from its Product support services which comprise of about 55% of the total revenue. In Q3 2021, this segment generated revenue worth $70.39 million. This was slightly lower as compared to the revenue earned one year prior in Q3 2020, which stood at $71.35 million.
Product licenses
The firm sells many types of business intelligence softwares, which are licensed on a term or perpetual basis and installed on-premises or in a public cloud that the customer procures and manages. Despite the fact that product licences come with product support, the software is fully functional at the start of the arrangement and is treated as a separate performance obligation.
In the latest quarter of 2021, product licenses contributed 20% to the company’s total revenue. In Q3 2021, this segment generated revenue worth $25.83 million. This was slightly lower as compared to the revenue earned one year prior in Q3 2020, which stood at $29.57 million.
Subscription services
The company also sells software access through MCE (MicroStrategy Cloud Environment service), which is a cloud subscription service that allows customers to access the software through a cloud environment. Technical assistance, monitoring, backups, updates, and quarterly service reviews are all included in cloud subscriptions that are sold separately.
This segment contributed 8% to the company’s total revenue in Q3 2021. The earnings from Subscription Services marked a total of $10.85 million. This indicated an increase on a year-on-year basis since the revenue collection in Q3 2020 was $8.31 million.
