The drop is largely attributable to a 17.5 % in gasoline gallons sold and an 18.2 % fall in the average retail fuel price. The drop in gasoline gallons sold was consistent with the national trend, which was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The drop in the average retail fuel price was caused by a drop in the cost of fuel. It also fell by 4.5% compared to $2.31 billion in Q3 2020. Supermarket Fuel contributed to 7.2% of Kroger’s revenue in Q4 2020.

Total sales to retail customers without fuel

Total sales to retail customers without fuel includes Digital sales, primarily including Pickup, Delivery, Ship, and pharmacy e-commerce sales.

Kroger’s Total sales to retail customers without fuel segment revenue increased from $25.72 billion in Q4 2019 to $28.29 billion in Q4 2020, up by 10% on a year-on-year basis. The substantial increase in similar sales, excluding fuel, was caused by extraordinary demand as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, digital sales growth, and market share gain. Market share gain led to an identical sales rise, excluding fuel, as sales surpassed the food retail industry’s overall growth in 2020. It also increased by 4.1% compared to $27.18 billion earned in Q3 2020. This segment accounted for 92% of the company’s total revenue in Q4 2020.

Other

Other revenues are largely related to external sales at food manufacturing plants, data analytics services, and third-party media income.

Kroger’s revenue from the Other segment grew from $0.16 billion in Q4 2019 to $0.25 billion in Q4 2020, marking a 50% increase on a year-on-year basis. This was a result of increased third-party media income, slightly offset by lower revenue as a result of the sale of Turkey Hill Dairy and You Technology in the first quarter of 2019. It also witnessed a 4.7% increase compared to $0.25 billion in Q3 2020. The Other segment contributed to 0.8% of the company’s total revenue.
