Elastic N.V. primarily generates its revenue from three segments namely professional services, license – self-managed, and subscriptions – self-managed and SaaS. The company delivers a combination of paid and free proprietary software, with access to customer support on both of them. To use the software in production and development environments, users can directly download the software or install it directly in the cloud as a managed offering.
Subscription – Self-managed and SaaS
Most of the revenue generated by the company comes through subscriptions of software taken by the users, in which customers can choose if they want to manage it by themselves (Self-managed) or through a host managed by the company in the cloud (SaaS). By getting a subscription, the users can get access to paid as well as unpaid proprietary features and related support services. Its categories are further bifurcated below:
SaaS: It is known as software as a service (“SaaS”), which provides access to a hosted software that helps customers by reducing the burden of administration. Some of its products are Elasticsearch Service and Site Search Service which are collectively known as Elastic Cloud. SaaS is considered as a single performance obligation by the company and therefore revenue is recognized towards the end of the contact period and over the period of time, performing the duty. Revenue from this segment marked an upsurge of about 51%, amounting to $106.46 million in Q1 2021 to $160.96 million in Q1 2022, on a year-on-year basis.
License – Self-managed
A self-managed subscription includes a license, which gives the user a right to use the company’s software along with the proprietary features. Likewise, after selling the license there is an obligation on the part of the company to offer maintenance and support on both the open-source and proprietary platforms. Under self-managed subscriptions, revenue is recognized when the license is delivered and correspondingly over the contract period for support and maintenance because of the stand-ready commitments made by the company. Some of its products include Elastic Stack (unpaid), Elastic Cloud Enterprise (paid), and Elastic Cloud on Kubernetes (paid). Revenue from this segment increased from $14.88 million in Q1 2021 to $16.22 million in Q1 2022, marking an upsurge of $1.34 million, or 9% on a year-on-year basis.
Professional Services
These are generally time-based arrangements that assist users by providing them with consulting services along with private and public training. This facilitates the users to gain necessary insights about the software to deploy, develop, and manage the software with ease. Revenue from this segment is recognized when the services are performed. Services provided under this segment are different from subscriptions and do not result in substantial customization of the company’s software. Revenue from this segment increased from $7.53 million in Q1 2021 to $15.91 million in Q1 2022, marking a double-digit increase on a year-on-year basis.
