Box Inc is an American company that develops Internet applications software. They serve customers worldwide. They provide an enterprise content management platform that enables organizations to manage their content and also allowing access and sharing of this content from anywhere on any device. Users can determine how their content will be shared with others. They use a SaaS cloud-based platform. The content can be shared and viewed in different file formats and media types. Box offers three types of accounts namely – Enterprise, Business, and Personal. The software integrates with enterprise business applications, and is compatible with various application environments, operating systems, and devices, ensuring that workers have access to their business content. There are official clients offered for Windows and macOS, but not for Linux. They offer a free version as well where the user can use the basic services. The services are also available on mobile devices such as Android, Blackberry10, iOS, Window, etc. Some of Box’s major clients are Morgan Stanley, JLL, General Electric, etc. Box competes with Dropbox, AWS, Sugarsync, iCloud, OneDrive for business, Sharefile, etc.
Box Inc’s revenue increased to $608.38 million in 2019 from $506.14 million in the previous year. Box Inc. has about 64.5 million users worldwide. The number of paying users has increased to almost 12% in 2019 from around 7-8% in 2017. Box Inc. has around 12.2 million paying users as of the first quarter of 2020 as compared to 5.98 million paying users in the first quarter of 2017.
The average revenue per user (ARPU) for paying users was $12.70 in the first quarter of 2017 after which it increased to $17.07 in the second quarter, dropped to $14.99 in the third quarter, and increased again to $19.15 in the last quarter. The figure then dropped to $11.52 in the first quarter of 2018 before increasing to $14.65 and $14.60 in the second and third quarters respectively and $20.75 in the fourth quarter. The ARPU then declined to $11.44 in the first quarter of 2019 after which it increased to $14.69 in the second quarter, dropped to $12.90 in the third quarter, and then increased to $19.40 in the fourth quarter of 2019. The ARPU declined to $9.70 in the first quarter of 2020 and is expected to increase in the remaining quarters to $13.84 in the second quarter,$13.02 in the third quarter, and $21.01 by the end of 2020. The quarterly ARPU for paying users has been increasing as compared to the same quarter in the previous year for almost all the quarters in the past 3 years.
The ARPU for paying users has been increasing slowly over the years and has been erratic quarter on quarter. The number of users of Box has been increasing steadily and therefore the revenue has seen growth. The revenue is expected to go up to $696.3 in 2020 and the number of users is expected to reach $70 million by the end of the year with paying users expected to increase to 13.41 million.
