This statistic highlights AMD’s Market Share from Q3 2016 onwards, split between Desktop (x86), Notebook (x86), Servers (x86), and Overall (x86) market share.

AMD’s Market Share in Q1 2021

Category Q1 2021 Q1 2020 YoY Change (bps)
Desktop (x86) 19.30% 18.60% +70 basis points
Notebook (x86) 18% 17.10% +90 basis points
Overall-(x86) 20.70% 14.80% +590 basis points
Servers (x86) 8.90% 5.10% +380 basis points

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) faces tough competition from Nvidia, Intel, Synopsys, Qualcomm, and Marvell Technology. As of Q1 2021, Nvidia had the highest market capitalization of $318.9 billion, followed by Intel’s $255.5 billion and AMD with $96.1 billion.

x86

x86 is a class of computer architectures that was developed by Intel based on an 8086 microprocessor. Many extensions have been made in x86 class over the years. This computer architecture has been implemented by Intel, AMD, VIA Technologies, and Cyrix. However, only Intel and AMD are active producers. Therefore this article shows AMD’s market share in its various product segments alongside a comparison with Intel’s market share.

Desktop

AMD’s desktop programs include the AMD Ryzen series processors and AMD Athlon, processors. The 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen desktop processor group was expanded in April 2020 by adding AMD Ryzen 3 3100 and AMD Ryzen 3 3300X processors with “Zen 2” core architecture for gamers, creators, and business users. The AMD Ryzen 4000 series desktop processors and the AMD Athlon 3000 series desktop processors with built-in Radeon graphics were introduced in July 2020 that provide power efficiency to gamers, streamers, consumers, and creators and also has multi-layered security features. In October 2020, the AMD Ryzen 5000 Series desktop processor was introduced.

As of Q1 2021, AMD’s Desktop market share was 19.30% which had grown by 0.70 pp year-over-year from 18.60% of Q1 2020. However, there has not been any progress from Q4 2020 to Q1 2021. When we compare AMD’s market share with Intel, in Q1 2020 Intel had 55.60% market share and AMD had 44.40% market share. In Q1 2021, AMD’s market share increased to 50.70%. The reason for the increase in market share was the increase in demand for high-end desktop PC models of AMD.

Notebook

AMD designs and develops high-performing and low-power notebooks for consumer and commercial markets. It launched AMD Ryzen 4000 Series Mobile Processors in January 2020. AMD Ryzen is an ultrathin gaming laptop designed to deliver performance and power efficiency. It also offers AMD Athlon, a thin and light notebook with a long battery life that enhances connectivity. AMD launched the first mobile AMD Ryzen and AMD Athlon processors for Chromebooks in September 2020.

As of Q1 2021, AMD’s notebook market share was 18% which had grown by 0.90 pp year-over-year from 17.10% of Q1 2020. The reason for the growth was due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the notebook market had exploded because of the work from home criterion.

Servers

Servers are designed to run applications often for extended periods with minimal human intervention. Servers include web, e-mail, cloud, print, and on-premise servers. Servers run applications like business intelligence, customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, and advanced scientific or engineering models to solve advanced computational problems. AMD developed a server platform based on the Zen microarchitecture which was named EPYC in May 2017. It is a brand of x86-64 microprocessors manufactured and marketed by AMD. EPYC processors provide benefits like more PCI Express lanes, high core counts, larger cache memory, and support for larger amounts of RAM.

AMD witnessed the highest single-quarter market share gain in Q1 2021 for server CPUs since 2006. AMD’s server market share grew by 3.8 pp year-over-year from Q1 2020, making it 8.9% of the market share in Q1 2021. When we compare AMD’s market share with Intel, in Q1 2020 AMD had a 1.70% market share and Intel had 98.30% market share. In Q1 2021, AMD’s market share increased to 2.40%.

Overall

AMD’s overall x86 market share has grown year-over-year, even if it has contracted quarter-over-quarter. From Q3 2020 to Q4 2020 it contracted by 3% and from Q4 2020 to Q1 2021 it contracted by 5% in overall x86 market share. AMD does not face any demand-related problem it can sell every chip it can produce. The problem was that TSMC was unable to keep enough chips in the market to satisfy demand.

In Q1 2020, AMD held 14.80% of the market share compared to all the competitors and grew 5.90 pp year-over-year to 20.70% market share in Q1 2021. In Q1 2020, AMD commanded 33.20% of the market share against Intel’s 66.70%. Today, AMD holds 39.50% of the market share, compared with Intel’s 60.50%. AMD has continued to grow its overall market share even as its desktop and laptop market share has dipped slightly for both of the past two quarters.
