Visa generates revenue from the fees it charges on debit and credit card transactions made by the government, merchant, strategic partners, businesses, and consumers. Events such as outbreaks of illnesses, pandemics, political uncertainties, international hostilities, armed conflict, etc affect the revenue that Visa could generate.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the lockdown was imposed in most countries and hence there was a reduction in expenditure incurred by the people because of high unemployment. Visa’s revenue from Client incentives and Data processing dropped by 6% whereas revenue from service dropped by 5% year-over-year in Q1 2021.

International regions

Visa Inc. has generated $3.02 billion in Q1 2021 which is approximately 53% of its total revenue. However, revenue from the international regions has witnessed adverse year-over-year growth of -10% from $3.34 billion of Q1 2020. 

In the international regions, Visa has its presence in countries like Australia, China, Colombia, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Qatar, Canada, India, Hong Kong, Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

Visa has the highest market share in Ireland, United Kingdom, Spain, Finland, Poland, and Turkey. Certain competitors are more concentrated in a specific geographic region, such as JCB Co., Ltd. in Japan, Discover in the U.S., and UnionPay in China.

Revenue across the regions varied due to the Covid restrictions, such as markets like New Zealand and Singapore generated more revenue due to fewer restrictions while markets like Japan and Hong Kong, which had restrictions for most of the quarter, generated less revenue. Some of the major partners of Visa in international regions are Codat, Incomm, Soft Space, Data Integrated Limited, Ingenico, Antelop Payments, PayCore, etc.

United States

Visa Inc. has generated $2.67 billion in Q1 2021 which is approximately 47% of its total revenue. However, revenue from the United States has decreased by 2% from $2.72 billion of Q1 2020. 

In 2020, the Click to Pay facility of Visa went live with payment processors, merchants, and platforms in the United States. Also, more than 70% of face-to-face transactions in the U.S. are done using contactless payments. More than 80 of the top 100 merchants use tap to pay facility provided by Visa as a payment method.
