The main properties of the company include the film and television studio Paramount Pictures, the CBS Entertainment Group, domestic networks, and the company’s streaming services. Also, it has a dedicated international division that manages international versions of its networks, as well as region-specific assets such as Telefe in Argentina and a 30% stake in the Rainbow S.p.A. studio in Italy.

Viacom’s total revenue increased by 154.79% from $2911 million in Q1 2020 to $7,417 million in Q1 2021 on a year-on-year basis.

Advertising

Viacom’s revenue from the Advertising segment increased from $1380 in Q1 2020 to $2680  in Q1 2021, an increase of 94.20% on a year-on-year basis. During this period, Advertising contributed 36.13% to Viacom’s total revenue. CBS broadcasts of Super Bowl LV and NCAA Tournament games have driven this growth.

Affiliate

Viacom’s revenue from Affiliate increased by 183.38% from $734 million in Q1 2020 to $2,080 million in Q1 2021 on a year-on-year basis. This segment contributed to 28.04% of the company’s total revenue. Annual contract increases and contractual renewals with TV stations that are affiliated with the CBS Television Network, MVPD’s, and MVPD’s led to the increase in revenue of the Affiliate segment.

Licensing and other 

Viacom’s revenue from the Licensing and other segments increased from $797 million in Q1 2020 to $1,840 million in Q1 2021, an increase of 130.87% on a year-on-year basis. During this period, Licensing and others contributed 24.81% to Viacom’s total revenue. This increase primarily reflecting growth from domestic licensing arrangements.

Streaming

The streaming segment contributed 11% to Viacom’s total revenue, which accounted for $816 million in Q1 2021. Revenues in the streaming segment were driven by the streaming service, Pluto TV, and other digital video platforms, as well as subscribers for subscription streaming services such as Showtime OTT, BET+, and Noggin.

Theatrical

Viacom’s Theatrical segment generated $1 million in Q1 2021. This segment contributed 0.01% company’s total revenue. The decrease in theatrical revenues reflects the impact of movie theatre closures or capacity reductions in the first quarter of 2021, whereas the prior-year quarter benefited from the theatrical release of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’.
