(All figures in billions)

Uber’s number of trips declined by 46% between Q1 2016 and Q1 2021, down from 2.68 billion in Q1 2016 to 1.45 billion in Q1 2021. The number of trips increased from 1.55 billion in Q1 2019 to 1.68 billion in Q2 2019, marking an 8% increase during the period. The growth rate decreased to 6% between Q2 2019 and Q3 2019 where it was 1.77 billion trips. The number of trips increased from 1.77 billion in Q3 2019 to 1.91 billion in Q4 2019, marking an 8% increase year-on-year. However, the number of trips decreased to 1.66 billion in the next quarter, down by 13%. The period between Q1 2020 and Q2 2020 witnessed the highest fall on 55% to 0.74 billion trips.

This was due to the COVID-19 outbreak, various governmental restrictions on travel, limitations on social or public gatherings, and other social distancing measures that had, an adverse impact on business and operations, including, for example, reducing the global demand for Mobility rides. They recovered from this fall in the next quarter with the number of trips increasing to 1.15 billion, up by 55%. During the period between Q3 and Q4 2020, the number of trips increased by 25% to 1.44 billion. It further increased to 1.45 billion trips in Q1 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly altered worldwide market and economic conditions, affecting Drivers, Delivery People, Merchants, consumers, and business partners, as well as our operations, results of operations, financial position, and cash flows. The considerable adverse changes in economic and market conditions caused by COVID-19 necessitated the recording of $1.7 billion in pre-tax impairment costs in Q1 2020, mostly related to their investment in Didi.
