Production Numbers

Tesla produced 180,338 units during Q1 2021. There was a 76% increase in production compared to Q1 2020 and 0.3% compared to the previous quarter. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, Tesla was forced to temporarily suspend the production in Fremont as a result they faced a huge drop in production after Q1 2020 where the production decreased by 20,400 units from Q1 to Q2. As the conditions improved, production started increasing from the 3rd quarter of 2020, where the production increased by 76% in the third quarter to 145,036 units.

The production further increased to 179,757 units during the fourth quarter of 2020. As a result of the pandemic, production was halted in Fremont but they began manufacturing Model 3 sedans in China which help them to recover their sales. China’s quick rebound compared to the United States helped Tesla to increase its production during this period.  Tesla has installed and tested the manufacturing equipment for their new versions of Model S and Model X in Q1 2021. They are focusing on increasing the production of the Model S, Model X and Model Y to at least minimum installed production capacities.

Deliveries Numbers

Tesla Inc. delivered 184,800 units during Q1  2021, which was a 109% increase compared to the previous year, where they delivered 88,400 units and a 2% increase was seen compared to the previous quarter, where 180,570 units were delivered. The deliveries have continuously increased since Q1 2020, from 88,400 units to 90,650 units between the first and second quarter, and up to 139,300 units in the third quarter.

Tesla’s sales have increased through the COVID-19 outbreak, as a result of the rise in demand in China and the new plant set up in Shanghai which allowed the company to sell cars in China, the world’s largest EV market without paying import duties to limit their sales. Increasing the exports of vehicles manufactured at Gigafactory Shanghai has been effective in mitigating the strain on the deliveries, and they will benefit further from situating additional factories closer to local markets.

Company Overview

Tesla Inc. an American company with headquarters in Palo Alto, California, was incorporated on July 1, 2003, in the State of Delaware. Elon Musk is the Chief Executive Officer of Tesla since October 2008 and a member of the Board since April 2004. He is also the Chief Operating decision-maker (CODM) at Tesla and he organizes the company, manages resource allocations, and measures performance among two operating and reportable segments:

  • Automotive
  • Energy Generation and Storage.

Automotive is comprised of the following vehicle models:

  • Model 3: A four-door mid-size sedan that is designed for mass-market appeal, where the deliveries started for the same from July 2017.
  • Model Y: A compact SUV (sport utility vehicle) built based on the Model 3 platform with a seating capacity for up to seven adults. Tesla started delivering these in March 2020.

  • Model X: It’s a mid-size SUV with a seating capacity of up to seven adults.

The deliveries for Model S and Model X started from June 2012 and September 2015 respectively. It’s worth noting that a mismatch in Tesla’s Production and Deliveries for any concerned quarter, implies that the company is either building inventory or depleting inventory.

Energy Generation and Storage

Tesla’s Energy Generation and Storage segment includes offerings such as:

Energy Storage Products: The most recent generations of Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack, are their lithium-ion battery energy storage products integrated with inverters and control technology, which they began delivering in 2016, 2017, and 2019, respectively.

Solar Energy Offerings: They sell retrofit solar energy systems to consumers and channel partners and also make them available through lease and power purchase agreement (PPA), and they carry out a subscription-based sale of solar power, which are sold in limited U.S. markets.
