(Delivery figures in actual units)

Tesla delivered 182,780 units of its Model 3 during Q1 2021, a 12% increase compared to Q4 2020, where 163,660 units were delivered. Further, there was a 139% increase as compared to Q1 2020, when 76,200 units were delivered. The deliveries of the model have steadily increased to 80,050 units during Q2 2020, and up to 179,757 units in Q3 2020. Model 3 is by far the most popular car in Q1 2021, with about 89% of the total deliveries. The reason for such popularity of Model 3 is because it is the most affordable car in Tesla’s product portfolio.

Tesla’s S/X deliveries during Q1 2021, saw a steep decline of 87%, where only 2,020 units were delivered, as to the Q4 2020, where 16,097 units were delivered. This also corresponded to an 83% decrease compared to Q1 2020, where the company delivered 12,200 units. Overall, while the deliveries of Tesla S/X saw a minor decrease in deliveries from Q1 2020 to Q2 2020, from 12,200 to 10,600 units, thereafter there was an increase in deliveries with 15,200 units being delivered in Q3 2020 and 16,097 units in Q4 2020. Tesla’s least popular cars are Model S/X, with 11% of the total deliveries.

The data also shows that Tesla’s deliveries by quarter have increased from 88,400 units to 184,800 units between Q1 2020 and Q1 2021, which is a 109% increase. Further analysis reveals that deliveries of Model 3 have grown at a rate of 139%, while those of Model S/X have fallen at a rate of 83% during this period. The reason for fewer deliveries of Model S/X is because the company has been preparing new updated versions of the Model S/X, which were announced in January 2021. Those updated vehicles were supposed to start shipping in March. But the company ran into an issue with regards to retooling the production lines at its Fremont, California factory where the Model S and Model X are made, thereby delaying production. Another plausible reason for the production delays could be the global chip shortage.

Tesla’s deliveries by quarter have increased through the COVID-19 outbreak, because of the rise in demand in China and the new plant set up in Shanghai which allowed the company to sell cars in China, which is the world’s largest EV market. Increasing the exports of vehicles produced at Gigafactory Shanghai has been effective in easing the strain on the deliveries and could be the reason for the increase in deliveries during Q1 2021. The company will benefit further from situating additional factories closer to local markets, reflecting in deliveries of the subsequent quarters.
