Sturm, Ruger & Company Inc. is an American firearms manufacturer centred in Southport, Connecticut, with other manufacturing sites in Newport, New Hampshire, Mayodan, North Carolina, and Prescott, Arizona. Alexander McCormick Sturm and William B. Ruger formed the firm in 1949, and it has been publicly listed since 1969. Ruger makes single and double-action revolvers, as well as shotguns, semi-automatic, bolt-action, and single-shot rifles, and semi-automatic handguns. Ruger is now America’s biggest handgun manufacturer, as well as the second largest pistol and revolver maker and rifle manufacturer in the United States, according to ATF figures for 2015.

The Company manufactures one model of pistol, all of its revolvers, and most of its rifles at the Newport, New Hampshire facility. Mostly, the company’s pistols are produced at the Prescott, Arizona facility. Few rifle models and pistol models are manufactured at the Mayodan, North Carolina facility. Competition in the firearms business is extreme and comes from both international and local manufacturers. While certain competitors focus on a single industry product category such as rifles or pistols, others manufacture products in all four industry categories (rifles, shotguns, pistols, and revolvers). The chief methods of competition in the industry are product improvement, quality, availability, brand, and price. The company believes that it holds a strong competitive position.

The majority of Sturm, Ruger & Co’s revenue is generated through the Firearms segment, accounting for 99.6% of the company’s total revenue, amounting to $177.3 million in Q3 2021. It has grown by 22.3% on a year-on-year basis when compared to $145.15 million earned in Q3 2020. However it has declined by 10.1% quarterly, when compared to $199.45 million earned in Q2 2021.

Castings

The castings segment supplies castings and MIM parts for the company’s firearms segment. Moreover, the castings segment produces some other products for several customers in a variety of industries.

Sturm, Ruger & Co’s revenue from the Castings segment increased by 31.5% on a year-on-year basis, from $0.54 million earned in Q3 2020 to $0.71 million earned in Q3 2021. Sturm, Ruger & Company Inc. and subsidiaries is mainly engaged in the design, production, and supply of firearms to domestic customers. Nearly all of the Company’s sales for the year ended December 31, 2020, were from the firearms segment, with around 1% from the castings segment. Export sales constitute approximately 4% of firearms sales. Its design and manufacturing maneuvers are located in the United States and almost all product content is domestic. The company has been in this industry since 1949 and was assimilated in its present arrangement under the laws of Delaware in 1969. The company chiefly offers products in 3 industry product categories-rifles, pistols, and revolvers. Its firearms are supplied through self-regulating wholesale distributors, principally to the profitable sporting market.

The Company produces and sells outlay castings made from steel alloys and metal injection molding (“MIM”) fragments for interior use in the firearms segment and has negligible sales to outside customers. The castings and MIM parts supplied to outside customers, either directly or through manufacturers’ agents, amounted to approximately 1% of the company’s total sales for the year ended December 31, 2020. The company goes by the symbol ‘RGR’ and is listed on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
