  • APMEA (Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Africa): In Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa, MasterCard’s number of cards grew 12.74% from 847 million in Q1 2020 to 892 million in Q1 2021. This region contributed the highest card share of 37.32% in Q1 2021.
  • Canada: Mastercard witnessed the lowest card share of 2.68% in Q1 2020 from this region. The Canada region also shows the lowest card issued growth of 3.23% from 62 million in Q1 2020 to 64 million in Q1 2021.
  • Europe: Mastercard’s witnessed the second-highest card-issued growth of 28.16% on a year-on-year basis from the Europe region. The card count increases from 609 million in Q1 2020 to 673 million in Q1 2021. In 2021, this region contributed only 19.44 % of the card share.
  • Latin America: The Latin America region consists of 20 countries and 14 dependent territories. Mastercards card grew 13.43% in the Latin America region from 216 million in Q1 2020 to 245 million in Q1 2021. This region contributed 10.25% of the card share in 2020.
  • United States: MasterCard’s Cards grew 7.95% in the United States from 478 million in Q1 2020 to 516 million in Q1 2021. This region contributed a 21.59% card share in Q1 2021.
  • Company Overview: Mastercard is an American multinational financial services corporation headquartered in Purchase, New York, United States. It was developed by an alliance of various regional bank card organizations in reaction to Bank of America’s BankAmericard, which eventually became Visa Inc.’s Visa credit card. Mastercard was founded as Interbank in 1966 and then renamed Master Charge in 1969. In 1979 it was again renamed Mastercards. As of December 31, 2020, the company employed around 21,000 people worldwide.

Mastercard was a cooperative that was owned by the over 25,000 financial institutions that issued its branded cards. The company is listed on the NYSE under the ticker MA and has a market capitalization of $367.1 billion as of May 2021. On May 25, 2006, the company, which was founded as a bank cooperative, went public, selling 95.5 million shares for $39 each. Mastercard has acquired 22 companies including Ekata, IfOnly, and many more. Mastercards faces tough competition with Visa, PayPal, UnionPay International, Capital One, and American Express.
