Lumentum Holdings manufactures and sells optical and photonic products across the globe. The firm operates in two segments optical communication ( OpComm) and Commercial Lasers. It was incorporated in 2015. The commercial laser segment provides uses in manufacturing, imaging, graphics, remote sensing, and precision machinery.

The optical communications segment offers components, subsystems, modules, etc. that enable the transmission and transport of video, audio, and text data over high-capacity fiber optic cables. They offer products such as tunable transponders, transceivers, tunable lasers, transmitter modules, receivers and modules, transport products like reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers, amplifiers, and optical channel monitors. They also provide components like multi-mode, Raman pumps, switches, photo detectors, isolators, and integrative passive modules. This segment also offers Super Transport Blade, which can be used for Ethernet applications and many other uses including 3-D sensing systems. It serves customers from data communication and telecommunication sectors, as well as consumer and industrial markets. Its primary competitors in this segment are Foxconn Technology, Acacia Communications, Neophotonics Corporation, Oclaro Inc., Finisar Corporation, Viavi Solutions Inc., and Furukawa Electric Co.

In the earlier years, till about 2018 almost 90% of the optical communications sales where coming from the telecommunication and data communication sector with minimal sales in the industrial and consumer market. After the last quarter of 2017, the sales from industrial and commercial markets started to rise and made up for about 30-40% of the revenue from optical communications.

Lumentum’s total revenue for the fiscal year 2019 was about $1.56 billion, which was a 25% increase from the previous year. Almost 85-90% of Lumentum’s total revenue comes from sales in the optical communication segment. Revenue from the optical communications segment has been growing in recent years. The 2019 revenue from optical communications alone was $1.37 billion. In the second quarter of 2018 optical communication sales from industrial and commercial markets exceeded the sales from telecom and datacom sectors for the first and only time, sales from industrial and commercial markets that quarter were $215.65 million and sales from telecom and data comm were $144.4 million.

Every other quarter telecom and datacom have exceeded industrial and commercial sales. In 2019 the sales from the industrial and commercial markets were declining quarter on quarter. Q1 sales from this sector were $133 million which went down to $119.5 million in the second quarter and then saw a big drop in the third quarter to $77.2 million after which the sales started rising again and reached $168 million in the first quarter of 2020.

The Telecomm and datacom sectors have always performed well for Lumentum. Revenue from this sector was growing quarter on quarter in 2019. Q1 revenue was $177.10 million which went up to $205.9 million in the second quarter and $300.7 million in the third quarter. The last quarter of 2019 saw a small drop in sales to $269.20 million, after which the sales from this sector have been relatively steady.

Lumentum is growing into the industrial and commercial markets as well. In 2020 it’s total revenue included an increased amount of revenue from the industrial and commercial market. Their telecommunication and data communication segment has been fairly consistent and are expected to carry on this consistency with better efficiency in the coming years.
