China
China is an emerging major region for the manufacturing of logic and memory chips. It is the world’s largest consumer of ICs (Integrated Circuits). Additionally, a significant portion of global FPD and PCB (printed circuit boards) manufacturing has migrated to China.
Government initiatives are driving China to expand its domestic manufacturing capacity and attract investment from semiconductor manufacturers from Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and the U.S.
However, the United States Department of Commerce has added certain China-based entities to the U.S. Entity List, thereby restricting the company’s ability to provide products and services to such entities without a license. In addition, they have imposed new export licensing requirements on China-based customers engaged in military end-uses. This has even mandated KLA’s customers to obtain an export license when they use that semiconductor capital equipment, which is based on U.S. technology, however, used to manufacture products associated with Huawei or its affiliates. These new rules potentially affect their business.
On a QoQ basis, the revenue from this region declined by more than 20%. However, on a YoY basis, it increased by more than 42%. Since 2016, the revenue from this region has increased by more than 622%.

Japan
On a QoQ basis, the revenue from this region grew by 12%. On a YoY basis, there was a 25% increase in the revenue. To hedge against changes in the Japanese Yen, KLA enters into forward and exchange contracts.
Europe & Israel and the Rest of Asia
KLA generates about 10% of its total revenue from these regions. On a QoQ basis, the revenue from these regions increased by 34%. On a YoY basis too, the revenue increased by 43%.
When we focus only on the revenue from Asia, a significant portion, about 81% of KLA’s total revenue is generated from here, where a substantial portion of the world’s semiconductor manufacturing capacity is located.
