On a QoQ basis, the total revenue generated increased by 12.9%. Even on a YoY basis, there was an increase of 42.5% in the total revenue. Overall, the total revenue has grown exponentially.

KLA has direct sales forces in Asia, the United States, and Europe. They even have sales, marketing, and services in other countries, including China, Germany, Israel, the United Kingdom, Japan, Singapore, Korea, and Taiwan. International revenues accounted for approximately 89% on an average in each of the last 3 years.

Taiwan

The majority of KLA’s total revenue came from Taiwan. In each of the last 3 years – 2019, 2020, and 2021, more than 10% of total revenue came from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (a Taiwan-based company).

On a QoQ basis, there was an increase of 23.8% in the revenue generated from this region. On a YoY basis, the revenue more than doubled, to a 103% increase. Post pandemic, the revenue has seen an increasing trend, with an absolute increase of 206%.

China

China is an emerging major region for the manufacturing of logic and memory chips. It is the world’s largest consumer of ICs (Integrated Circuits). Additionally, a significant portion of global FPD and PCB (printed circuit boards) manufacturing has migrated to China.

  • Flat Panel Display (FPD): It is a display appliance that uses a thin panel design and even includes flexible displays.

Government initiatives are driving China to expand its domestic manufacturing capacity and attract investment from semiconductor manufacturers from Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and the U.S.

However, the United States Department of Commerce has added certain China-based entities to the U.S. Entity List, thereby restricting the company’s ability to provide products and services to such entities without a license. In addition, they have imposed new export licensing requirements on China-based customers engaged in military end-uses. This has even mandated KLA’s customers to obtain an export license when they use that semiconductor capital equipment, which is based on U.S. technology, however, used to manufacture products associated with Huawei or its affiliates. These new rules potentially affect their business.

On a QoQ basis, the revenue from this region declined by more than 20%. However, on a YoY basis, it increased by more than 42%. Since 2016, the revenue from this region has increased by more than 622%.

Korea

On a QoQ basis, the revenue from this region grew by more than 35%. However, on a YoY basis, there was a decline of 7%. In each of the last 3 years – 2019, 2020, and 2021, more than 10% of total revenue came from Samsung Electronics. In Q3 2021, the KLA recorded the highest ever revenue of $557.51 million from Korea.

North America

There is a growth in the revenue in North America on a QoQ as well as a YoY basis. It grew by 53% and 26% respectively. The most recent quarter was the best performance in the revenue growth from this region.

Japan

On a QoQ basis, the revenue from this region grew by 12%. On a YoY basis, there was a 25% increase in the revenue. To hedge against changes in the Japanese Yen, KLA enters into forward and exchange contracts.

Europe & Israel and the Rest of Asia

KLA generates about 10% of its total revenue from these regions. On a QoQ basis, the revenue from these regions increased by 34%. On a YoY basis too, the revenue increased by 43%.

When we focus only on the revenue from Asia, a significant portion, about 81% of KLA’s total revenue is generated from here, where a substantial portion of the world’s semiconductor manufacturing capacity is located.
