The Company operates in four segments: Automotive, Financial Services, Ford Smart Mobility LLC, and Central Treasury Operations. They are the second-largest automaker in the United States.

Ford’s Number of Manufacturing Plants by Location

Region Number of Plants in 2018 Contribution in 2018
Asia-Pacific 4 6.60%
Europe 15 24.60%
Middle East & Africa 2 3.30%
North America 32 52.50%
South America 8 13.10%

The company’s automotive segment primarily includes the sale of Ford and Lincoln brand vehicles, service parts and accessories across the world, together with the associated costs to develop, manufacture, distribute and service the vehicles, parts, and accessories.  The Company also offers extended service contracts.

Some of the popular vehicles under the Ford and Lincoln brand name are Ford Taurus, Ford Explorer, Ford Flex, Ford Mustang, Lincoln Continental, Lincoln Corsair, etc. Their major competitors are General Motors Company, Honda Motor Company, PSA Piguet Citroen, Volkswagen AG Group, etc.

The company has various regional business units in North America, South America, Asia – Pacific, Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Being an American company majority of its manufacturing units are located in North America. In 2010 Ford had around 73 manufacturing plants worldwide, but since then the number has been decreasing slowly as Ford reduced its operations marginally. By 2014 the total number of manufacturing plants worldwide had reduced to 62. This number slightly increased to 67 in 2015.

In 2015 the manufacturing plants in the Asia Pacific region were 12 which then reduced to 7 in 2016 and 4 units by 2017. The manufacturing plants in Europe increased to 16 in 2015 from 12 in the previous year, before this increase the number of manufacturing plants had been reducing year on year since 2010.  After this, the number of units remained unchanged until one manufacturing unit was dropped in 2018. The number of manufacturing plants in the Middle East and Africa has not seen any addition or reduction and has remained at 2 through 2015 to 2018. The number of plants in South America has also remained unchanged since 2010.

The major drop in the number of plants came from North America where Ford had 38 manufacturing units in 2010. The number kept declining since then to 35 in 2011, 32 in 2012, 30 by 2014, and 29 in 2015. In 2017 Ford finally increased the number of manufacturing plants in North America to 31 and 32 in 2018. By 2018 the total number of manufacturing plants across the world was 61.

Ford has been performing poorly in the Asia- Pacific region over the last few years. Ford is now looking to strengthen its operations in the Asia Pacific region and is expected to increase production in the region. The American market for Ford has started picking up again. European markets were fairly steady but have seen a small decline in demand for Ford cars. Hopefully, in the next five to six years Ford can bounce back and regain lost market share in countries outside the U.S.
