Expedia’s total revenue increased from $1,504 million in Q3 2020 to $2920 million in Q3 2021, indicating a 94% growth on a year-on-year basis. The revenue in Q3 2021 increased by 38% compared to the previous Q2 2021.

Retail

The retail segment provides a full range of travel and advertising services to worldwide customers through a number of consumer brands that target a variety of customer segments and geographic regions with tailored offerings. The company’s portfolio of retail brands includes Expedia.com and Hotels.com in the United States and localized Expedia and Hotels.com websites throughout the world, Vrbo, Orbitz, Travelocity, Wotif Group, ebookers, CheapTickets, Hotwire.com, CarRentals.com, CruiseShipCenter and Classic Vacations.

Expedia’s revenue from retail increased by 83% from $1264 million in Q3 2020 to $2315 million in Q3 2021 on a year-on-year basis. It also grew by 34% compared to $1715 million earned in Q2 2021. This segment contributed to 79% of the company’s total revenue.

B2B

Expedia’s B2B segment is comprised of the Expedia Business Services organization including Expedia Partner Solutions, which offers private label and co-branded products for making travel services available to travelers through third-party company branded websites. This segment also includes Egencia which is a full-service travel management company engaged in providing travel services to businesses and their corporate customers.

Expedia Partner Solutions brings travel offerings for a variety of airlines, hotels, travel agencies, etc. using its API and template solutions. Egencia maintains a global presence in more than 60 countries and provides, among other things, a global technology platform coupled with assistance from expert travel consultants, relevant supply targeted at business travellers, and consolidated reporting for its clients.

Expedia’s revenue from B2B increased by 141% from $203 million in Q3 2020 to $490 million in Q3 2021 on a year-on-year basis. It also grew by 60% compared to $305 million earned in Q2 2021. This segment contributed to 17% of the company’s total revenue.

Trivago

Trivago is Expedia’s majority-owned hotel metasearch company, situated in Dusseldorf, Germany. Launched in 2005, trivago is a main worldwide brand in lodging search and can be accessed worldwide through 54 localized websites and applications in 32 languages.

Trivago earns advertising revenue by sending referrals to online travel companies and travel service providers from its website. The online platform allows travellers to access price comparisons from hundreds of booking websites for over 5 million hotels and other accommodations, including over 3.8 million units of alternative accommodations, in over 190 countries.

Expedia’s revenue from trivago increased by 120% from $55 million in Q3 2020 to $121 million in Q3 2021 on a year-on-year basis. It also grew by 32% compared to $91 million earned in Q2 2021. This segment contributed to 4% of the company’s total revenue.
