Dollar Tree Inc. owns and operates discount variety stores across the U.S and Canada. They offer merchandise products at fixed prices. The company was originally called Only $1. t operates stores under the names Dollar Tree, Deal$, Dollar Tree Deal$, Dollar Giant, and Dollar Bills. The stores offer a wide variety of everyday basic products and it’s supplemented. Their merchandise mix includes food, health and beauty care, and household consumables such as paper and household chemicals and in select stores, frozen food, toys, durable house wares, gifts, party goods, greeting cards, soft lines, and other items. The Seasonal goods include Easter, Halloween and Christmas, and other festive merchandise.

The firm operates in two business  segments:

Dollar Tree – This segment deals with discount variety stores that offer merchandise at a fixed price of $1 or less. In Canada stores the fixed price is $1.25 (CAD). The merchandise mix for the dollar tree stores is consumable merchandise, various merchandise, and seasonal goods. The Dollar Tree segment includes 6,650 stores operating under the Dollar Tree and Dollar Tree Canada brands as of 2018.

Family Dollar – This segment operates general merchandise stores with a selection of competitively priced products in convenient neighborhood stores. The merchandise mix for the family dollar stores consists of consumable merchandise, home products, apparel and accessories merchandise, seasonal merchandise, and electronics merchandise. The Family Dollar segment includes 8,185 stores under the Family Dollar brand name as of 2018. They sell merchandise generally priced between $1 and $10.

Dollar tree has seen growth in its business over the years. Owing to this growth they have been able to increase the number of stores under both their segments year on year as well as quarter on quarter. At the start of 2018 they had 665o stores under Dollar tree and 8190 stores under Family Dollar. After the first quarter of 2018 the number of Dollar Tree stores increased to 6720. The number of Dollar tree stores has been increasing since then with 6810 stores at the end of quarter two, 6920 stores at the end of quarter 3 which remained the same in the last quarter. The first quarter of 2019 again saw a rise in the number of stores to 7100 stores and to 7310 stores at the end of the second quarter.

At the end of the first quarter of 2018 the number of family dollar stores had increased to 8240. The number of Family Dollar stores increased to 8260 in the second quarter and remained at the same number for the rest of the year. 2019 saw a decline in the number of Family Dollar stores to 8160 in the first quarter and 7810 in the second quarter.

Even though the number of Family Dollar stores remains greater than Dollar Tree the growth in Dollar tree stores might out number Family Dollar in the coming years. One of the reasons for this is the affordability and customer coverage that Dollar Tree stores have over Family Dollar. Despite this the firm is trying to restructure its Family Dollar stores to provide a more fun shopping environment and we can expect to see substantial growth in both the segments.
