An American chain of variety stores, Dollar General Corporation, is headquartered in Tennessee. The Company operates 15,000 stores in the United States, as of July 2018. James Luther Turner and Cal Turner, own the Company as a family-owned business called J.L. Turner and Son in Scottsville, Kentucky, in the year 1939. In 1955, the Company changed the name to Dollar General Corporation, while in 1968, the Company went public on the NYSE. Dollar General Corporation has been delivering value to shoppers for over 75 years. In 1999 and 2018, the Company is recognized by Fortune 500. In 2017, Dollar General grew to become one of the most profitable stores in the rural United States, with revenue reaching around $21 billion.

Dollar General has more than 16,368 stores as of February 28, 2020, in 45 states and counting. Texas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio are the states with the most number of Dollar General locations, while Wyoming, Washington, Utah, Rhode Island, and Nevada with the least number of Dollar General locations.

The year 2016

For 2016, the Company planned to open 900 new stores and remodel 875 stores. During the first quarter, the Company opened 249 new stores and remodeled or relocated 301 stores, with 13 store closings. With a slight increase, the Company opened 510 new stores and remodeled 594 stores till Q2. After 39 weeks, the Company relocated 861 stores. After a consistent growth throughout the year, the Company opened 900 new stores and remodeled or relocated 906 stores, with a total of 63 store closings.

The year 2017

The store count consistently increased during 2017. In the first quarter, the Company opened 293 new stores and remodeled or relocated 301 stores, with 12 store closing. After the 26-week period, the Company opened 574 new stores, which is higher than last year, and remodeled 555 stores. Till the end of Q3, Dollar General opened 1,044 new stores, including the rendering of 263 store locations acquired in the last quarter, while relocated 719 stores. During FY 2017, the Company opened 1,315 new stores and remodeled or relocated 764 stores.

The year 2018

During the Q1 FY 2018, the Company opened 241 new stores, remodeled, and relocated 353 stores, with mere 13 store closing. With the opening of 510 new stores in the second quarter, the Company remodeled 643 stores and relocated 67 stores. After the 39-week period, constant growth leads the Company to achieve 750 new stores count, with remodeling and relocation of 1,017 stores. Till the end of the year FY 2018, the Company opened 900 new stores and relocated 115 stores, a decline of 31.55% reported compare to last year.

The year 2019

In Q1, the Company opened 240 new stores with the relocation of 27 stores. After the end 26-week period of 2019, the Company tolled 489 as new stores count with remodeling and relocation of 699 stores. Till Q3, the Company opened 724 new stores with 45 stores closing and relocating 75 stores. With consistent growth during the fiscal year 2019, the Company opened 975 new stores, remodeled 1,024 stores, and transferred 100 stores.
