Cardinal Health’s Revenue by Segment

Segment Q1 2021 Q4 2021 Q1 2022 Revenue Contribution in Q1 2022
Pharmaceutical $35,112 $38,344 $36,822 91%
Medical $3,957 $4,246 $4,149 9%

(All figures are in millions, except percentage)

Cardinal Health’s revenue increased from $39,069 million in Q1 2021 to $43,971 million in Q1 2022, marking a 12.54% growth on a year-on-year basis. It also grew by 3.24% as compared to $42,590 million earned in Q4 2021.

Cardinal Health’s revenue is further bifurcated into the following segments:

Pharmaceutical

  • Pharmaceuticals, including branded and generic, specialty pharmaceuticals, and over-the-counter healthcare and consumer items are distributed in the United States through the Pharmaceutical segment.
  • This business segment also repackages generic pharmaceuticals and other healthcare products for pharmaceutical manufacturers and healthcare providers; operates nuclear pharmacies and radiopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities; and provides pharmacy management services to hospitals, other healthcare providers, and payers.

Cardinal Health’s revenue from the Pharmaceutical segment increased from $35,112 million in Q1 2021 to $36,822 million in Q1 2022, marking an increment of 9.2% on a year-on-year basis. In Q4 2021, the major contribution to the company’s revenue, of 90% was made by the Pharmaceutical segment.

The increase in Pharmaceutical segment profit was mostly attributable to increased volume compared to the prior-year period, which was negatively impacted by COVID-19, and was largely offset by increased expenses linked to information technology infrastructure investments.

Medical

  • Cardinal Health’s medical, surgical, and laboratory goods are manufactured, sourced, and distributed in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and other regions by the Medical segment.
  • The Medical segment also provides supply chain services and solutions to hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, clinical laboratories,. and other healthcare providers. Through the Cardinal Health at-Home Solutions business, this section also delivers medical items to patients’ homes in the U.S.

Cardinal Health’s revenue from the Medical segment showed an increment from $3,957 million in Q1 2021 to $4,149 million in Q1 2022, indicating a 4.85% growth on a year-on-year basis. The medical segment was responsible for contributing 9% to total revenue in Q1 2022.

The rise was principally attributable to the growing emphasis on PPE, greater volumes in the company’s laboratory business, and an increase in the volume of surgical items used in elective surgeries, which was slightly offset by the impact of the Cordis business divestment.
