They provide communication services to retail as well as commercial customers. The Turner component operates basic television networks, while the Home Box Office (HBO) works on premium pay networks. AT&T’s Programming and Production Costs

Xandr is their smallest segment and deals with advertisement and they also provide their services in Latin America. Thus AT&T has diversified itself into different sectors.

2019 revenue for AT&T was $181.2 billion as compared to $170.8 billion in 2018. Growth in domestic wireless service and business service revenues offset the decline in revenue from domestic video and Warnermedia. Full-year free cash flow was $29.0 billion compared to $22.45 billion in 2018, up by almost 30%.

AT&T’s programming and production costs include theatrical films and television episodes produced and those which are still in development.

AT&T’s programming and production costs for HBO were gradually increasing quarter on quarter in 2019, starting $482 million in the first quarter to 648 million in the 4Th quarter of 2019. Their programming costs for Turner were as low as $795 million in the third quarter of 2019 but headed back up in the last quarter to $1.23 billion. AT&T has invested heavily in Warner Bros with programming costs in the last quarter of 2019 of $2.10 billion, which was a big jump from the previous quarter’s expense of $1.62 billion.

As for Q1 2020 AT&T’s programming and production expenses for HBO were reduced to $585 million as compared to the previous quarter. Turner’s expenses were brought drown to $1.10 billion and Warnermedia expenses were also brought down to $1.82 billion.

The acquisition of Warnermedia lead to a major shift in AT&T’s business model and the company seems to be adjusting well following the acquisition. AT&T is now well-positioned as it holds a huge customer base and a lot of premium content. They plan to launch their subscription video-on-demand service as well.
