This statistic highlights American Airlines’ Historical Departures, reported on a quarterly basis from Q1 2016 onwards.

American Airlines is the largest airline in the U.S and one of the largest in the world. It is the major subsidiary of AMR Corp. They provide air transportation internationally as well as domestic travel under the brand name American Eagle. It also offers freight and mail services through its cargo division. They operate more than 900 mainline aircraft and about 600 regional aircraft. The companies cargo and regional services together account for only 20% of the company’s sales, the rest is through their mainline services. The mainline services segment is their major business segment and forms more than 75% of the company’s revenue. They provide scheduled transportation services to more than 50 countries across the world. The airlines have hubs in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington DC. From these hubs, they operate flights to Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and other neighbouring countries.

The airlines had recorded 272,000 departures in the first quarter of 2016, which increased to 283,000 in the second quarter, 282,000 in the third quarter and then dropped to 265,000 in the fourth quarter.

The number of departures reduced slightly in 2017 to 262,000 in the first quarter, 278,000 in the second quarter, 275,000 in the third quarter and 265,000 in the fourth quarter.

The departure figures improved in 2018 and increased to 263,000 in the first quarter, 280,000 in the second quarter, 282,000 in the third quarter and 273,000 in the fourth quarter.

And the departure figures improved significantly in 2019 to 271,000 in the first quarter, 279,000 in the second quarter, 287,000 in the third quarter and 279,000 in the fourth quarter.

The departure numbers for American Airlines saw a small drop in 2017, but have been fairly stable with little improvement year on year and quarter on quarter. In 2019, American plans to add 15 gates and 100 departures per day at DFW, and in 2020, seven new gates at Charlotte with another 75 daily departures. The departure numbers are expected to take a huge slump in 2020 due to the restrictions on air travel. Airlines are expected to report huge losses for the year owing to little or no business operations. Domestic operations can still generate some amount of revenue for the company, but that will not be enough to meet the expenses. Being a trusted brand throughout the world American Airlines will bounce back once the travel restrictions are eased. The number of operating flights will decrease in the coming quarters and we can expect normalcy by 2021 if all goes to plan.
