Ambarella’s technology helps capture crisp, clear digital images in cameras designed for sports, autos, drones, and security. They sell their solutions into multiple end markets, including consumer cameras and Internet Protocol, or IP, security cameras, which are referred to as the camera market, as well as broadcast encoding and IP video delivery applications, that are also called as the infrastructure market.

Ambarella’s system on chips (SoCs) is designed to deliver a combination of video compression, image processing and computer vision performance with low power operation to enable the cameras to extract data from high-resolution video streams. Their video chips can gather high def images even in low light. Wintech, Gopro, Chicony. are some of its major customers. The majority of Ambarella’s revenue comes from Taiwan (Over 50%) and other countries in the Asia- Pacific region. Europe is the second biggest market for Ambarella followed by the U.S.A.

Their major competitors are Xperi, Lam Research, Adesto Technologies, Texas Instruments, Foresight, and Analog Technologies.

A purchase commitment is a firm commitment to acquire goods or services from a supplier. Companies generally enter into purchase agreements to lock in a particular price or to lock in the production capacity of a supplier and can be used as a defensive tool to keep competitors from using the production capacity of the manufacturer.

Ambarella Inc. manufacturing purchase commitments have been varying across years and quarters. Back in 2017 as of the first quarter the company had $21.10 million worth of purchase agreements, in the second quarter they had purchase agreements worth $31 million, in the third quarter they had $22.10 million worth of purchase agreements and then $23.90 million worth of purchase agreements in the last quarter.

In 2018 their purchase agreements were as follows: $31.7 million in the first quarter, $36.80 million in the second quarter, $25.7 million in the third quarter, and $24.30 million in the fourth quarter.

For 2019 their purchase agreement values were: $32.10 million in the first quarter, $22.10 million in the second quarter, $21.80 million in the third quarter, and $28.20 million in the last quarter of 2019.

As of the current year, 2020 their purchase agreement values are $22.90 million in the first quarter, $41.30 million in the second quarter which was their largest in the last three years, $27.60 million in the third quarter and $35.90 million in the last quarter.

Ambarella has been experiencing slow growth due to the loss of one of its major customers – GoPro. Despite this huge setback Ambarella looks set to regain back its old position in 2020. With the increase in estimated revenues for the company, we might be looking at a turnaround for the company in the coming few years.
